BUFFALO, NY — Erie County Republican Chairman Michael Kracker today blasted Albany Democrats for advancing legislation to redraw New York’s judicial districts, calling it a brazen partisan power grab that threatens the independence of the state’s courts.
.
“This is judicial gerrymandering, plain and simple. Earlier this week, Albany Democrats voted to rig our state and federal maps for political gain, and now they’re coming for the courts themselves.”
.
The bill
(S10626/A11550) manipulates judicial district boundaries to benefit the Democratic machine and strips power from communities that have elected judges of all parties to represent them on the bench.
.
“Every Erie County Democrat supporting this bill is complicit in another assault on an independent judiciary. Their constituents and the legal community will know exactly where they stood when Albany acted to gerrymander their courts.”
.
“This corrupt bill is being rushed through without a single public hearing and without any review by the Judiciary Committee. This is raw backroom politics being injected into our judicial system, and every New Yorker should be disgusted,” Kracker concluded.
